Conceptualized model of a human observer in a perceptual task measuring contrast threshold

چکیده

Introduction There are several possible mechanisms that might underlie perceptual excellence, which we can describe by reference to a metaphor regarding audio amplifiers. There are several factors that limit a physical device such as a radio receiver. First, the internal amplifier has some intrinsic noise, which gets amplified along with the radio signal. Second, the radio tuner may be unacceptably wide, thus letting in unwanted noise from neighboring frequencies. Finally, the decision stage (in this case the human listener) may not be optimal. For instance, if the listener is not very familiar with the language coming in over the receiver, very little information will pass through the system.

Designing a Robust Control Scheme for Robotic Systems with an Adaptive Observer

This paper introduces a robust task-space control scheme for a robotic system with an adaptive observer. The proposed approach does not require the availability of the system states and an adaptive observer is developed to estimate the state variables. These estimated states are then used in the control scheme. First, the dynamic model of a robot is derived. Next, an observer-based robust contr...

External noise distinguishes attention mechanisms

We developed and tested a powerful method for identifying and characterizing the effect of attention on performance in visual tasks as due to signal enhancement, distractor exclusion, or internal noise suppression. Based on a noisy Perceptual Template Model (PTM) of a human observer, the method adds increasing amounts of external noise (white gaussian random noise) to the visual stimulus and ob...

Bayesian adaptive estimation of threshold versus contrast external noise functions: The quick TvC method

External noise paradigms, measuring contrast threshold as a function of external noise contrast (the "TvC" function), provide a valuable tool for studying perceptual mechanisms. However, measuring TvC functions at the multiple performance criteria needed to constrain observer models has previously involved demanding data collection (often>2000 trials). To ease this task, we developed a novel Ba...

24.1: Measuring the Perceived Contrast of Natural Images

We show how perceived contrast of natural images, as a function of spatial frequency, is measurable using a novel form of the psychophysical ‘classification image’ paradigm. Contrast spatial frequency weighting functions peak at mid-high frequencies, and are more stable than predicted by common definitions of image contrast or contrast sensitivity. 1. Objective and background Perceived contrast...

Landscape assessment of high-rise buildings: A method based on 3DGIS, BIM and AHP

In this paper, we propose a quantitative indicator for measuring and ranking real estate from the perspective of the surrounding landscape by integrating the building information model (BIM) and the three-dimensional geospatial information system (3DGIS) based on the AHP method. The landscape is one of the qualitative variables which it's measuring and quantifying is a complex task. In previous...
